I think it’s safe to say that the farmhouse sensation is sweeping the nation! And I am 100% on board. There is nothing more visually satisfying than natural wood elements with a splash of greenery. And I have been trying to get my hands on some of those Farmhouse Essentials.

While I am in full support of the trend, the included price tags are enough to send my sleep deprived, caffeine medicated heart into total failure!

But fear not!! There is hope…

Farmhouse Essentials from the Thrift Store

After restarting my heart and fleeing the home decor store before my heart had time to convince my head how necessary all the beautiful farmhouse pieces were, I turned to my happy place….the local thrift store.

Now, I might be lose some of you as soon as I mention second hand items. But let me just say, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. (Insider tip: There are very few things that cannot be put through the washing machine or dishwasher.)

My mom was once a die hard thrift store non-believer. But, after dragging her along on enough of my adventures, she has had a change of heart!

Still not convinced it can be done? Farmhouse from the thrift store?

No problem! I love a little show and tell. So without further adieu…..

1. Baskets

There are no if’s, and’s, or but’s. If you want the farmhouse look, baskets are essential. This was good news for me, because I am desperately addicted to baskets (whenever I come across one that catches my fancy, it comes home to my reserve stash).

Baskets are crazy versatile, and can go just about anywhere in your home. Big ones hold blankets, small ones can be vases, flat ones make great wall decor; the possibilities are endless.

Here’s another post I have just on Decorating with Baskets!

2. Greenery

Not everyone is on the same page about greenery. Currently, I am fond of it in the truest sense of the word, only using green foliage in my decor without flowers or bright colors. If that’s not you, don’t worry, the thrift store has plenty of options!!

And you can’t beat the prices. I recently went to Hobby Lobby for specific greenery I needed for an event I was planning. Don’t get me wrong, HL is a magical place with incredibly reasonable prices. However, this mama prefers ridiculously cheap over reasonably affordable haha. Once you pay $1 it’s hard to go back to $10+.

3. Candle Holders

I’m OBSESSED with candle holders (candle sticks? Whatever you call them, I love them!). And, there are plenty looking for a home at the thrift store. I’m pretty sure I have some in every material possible: wood, glass, brass, they are all amazing!

Wood can be painted and distressed for the farmhouse look. Brass is another option. And if you’re not a fan of the natural brass, they can be painted black (or any other color) to fit your farmhouse theme.

For special events, I love pulling out my MANY brass tapir holders for a gorgeous tablescape.

Here are more ideas on How to Decorate with Candlesticks.

4. Trays

Trays are full of potential! They can be used the traditional way on tables or even foot rests. Or you can get creative with them and try some non traditional options.

One of my favorite things to do with trays are hand them as wall decor! You can use vintage silver trays, wooden painted trays, or even white glass trays. Seriously guys, the possibilities are endless.

This white glass tray worked perfectly for these Easy DIY Terrariums.

5. Glass Vases/Jars

Okay, you ABSOLUTELY should not buy glassware before checking at the thrift store. THEY HAVE SO MANY!

Which is good news because that means they are dirt cheep. My local store sells vases anywhere from $.10 to $2, depending on what kind you’re looking for. Mix and match for a genuine farmhouse look.

6. White Pitchers

This is a classic farmhouse look. White pitchers look great on their own or mixed in with other styling elements. Because of the nature of thrift stores, they will most likely be mismatched. Which enhances the farmhouse look of them even more!

7. Silver Serve Ware

I couldn’t talk about my white pitchers without mentioning my silver serve ware. Not everyone would agree that silver is an essential farmhouse element, but it definitely qualifies in this house. Especially when it comes with a beautiful natural patina!

Well, there you have it. The next time you need a farmhouse fix, consider trading those crazy price tags for a treasure hunt at your local thrift store.

Certain stores give me the willies too! I’m lucky enough to live near a goodwill located in a pretty nice neighborhood. Vendor coops are probably my favorite; they are like craft festivals year round.
