Cute Cardigan Outfits and What to Wear with a Cardigan

If there’s one thing I couldn’t survive without in my wardrobe it’s cardigans. One might say they are the mommy equivalent to a super hero cape! I love putting together cute cardigan outfits and finding new combinations of what to wear with a cardigan. If you’ve ever wondered how to wear a cardigan, I’d love to help!

I’ve put together my top five favorite cardigan options with three different styling options for each!

Comfy, Casual, Classy

Comfy: Being comfortable is a number one priority for this mama. So, these outfits are for when I’m sitting around at home and not planning to do anything special.

Casual: When I want to look like I’ve invested effort into myself and still be comfortable enough to chase little ones around, I pull out one of these casual outfit ideas.

Classy: One mama’s classy may be another mama’s casual. But for me, these are options that could be paired with a heal or worn for a date night.

How to Wear a Cardigan: Black

No wardrobe is complete without a black cardigan! Black is a classic color that goes perfectly with almost any outfit. If you’re here to figure out what to wear with a cardigan, this is the perfect place to start.

Comfy

Putting this black, long cardigan with a lighter top and a pair of jeans is a classic look for any style. The pants balance the long cardigan, and the light shirt creates contrast from the deep color of the cardigan.

Casual

This one might be a little closer to classy for some, but there’s something so comfy about no waist bands! I’m here to say, dresses are great for casual outfit ideas and a great option for what to wear with a cardigan. Layering heather grey with black is one of my favorite options especially when you add gold accessory accents!

Classy

There is something so attractive about a geometric pattern! And this tunic over leggings is a great combo for cute cardigan outfits. You’ll be date night ready in this cardigan.

How to Wear a Cardigan: Tan

This tan knit cardigan is another great option that goes well with pretty much anything. I have three in a similar color and I wear them ALL THE TIME! I tend toward a dark wardrobe, and this light cardigan is a great way to balance it out.

Comfy

Does it get any more comfy than leggings, a t-shirt, and a cozy cardigan? The answer is, no! Leggings are pretty popular for what to wear with a cardigan, so I tried not to over use them in my cute cardigan outfits. But, this is on of my go to outfits, and I had to include it.

Casual

For a more casual look, I put this tan cardigan with a velvet tee and a pair of jeans. Black velvet is AMAZING, and this cardigan helps give it a casual touch for every day use. This is a great casual option for how to wear a cardigan.

Classy

You’ve already seen a casual option for how to wear a cardigan with a dress. So this one is for everyone who prefers dresses to stay in the classy column. You can add more layers with a scarf and you’re good to go!

How to Wear a Cardigan: Mauve

This mauve color is my current obsession!! It’s like the perfect mixture of brown and purple, and goes so well with my neutrals wardrobe!

Comfy

This soft color goes so well with a pair of jeans. Plus it’s super versatile and can be put with either a dark or a light top for cute cardigan outfits.

Casual

I love pairing black pants with a dark top, and using a cardigan to lighten up the outfit. This is also perfect for how to wear a cardigan with a strong pattern.

Classy

Because this cardigan has waterfall pockets that go pretty low on my short self, I usually put it with pants or floor length bottoms. You can’t go wrong with a black maxi. And stripes are a wardrobe staple for me, so I had to include them in this post!

How to Wear a Cardigan: Short Sleeve

Short Sleeve Cardigans are AMAZING! They’re the perfect way to add texture and layers to an outfit without the threat of overheating. They are great for cooler (but not fridged) seasons like spring or early fall.

Comfy

I cannot tell you how obsessed I am with putting white, taupe, and black together! This is definitely one of my favorite cute cardigan outfits. And a frequent flyer for hanging around the house. It doesn’t get better than yoga pants and a slouchy cardigan.

Casual

Colored jeans, and a black top are easy staples that can be mixed and matched with a neutral taupe cardigan. If you’re not sure what to wear with a cardigan, you really can’t go wrong with a neutral color palette.

Classy

Ok guys, I have a confession…I have WAY too many black dresses! But every time I come across one at the thrift store, I can’t resist picking it up for a couple bucks! So, I’m always coming up with new ways of wearing them. Putting this slouchy taupe cardigan over a black shift dress is great for work or dinner out.

How to Wear a Cardigan: Heather Grey

The flecked look of a heather grey is great for adding texture to solid outfits, while also being a great option for prints. It’s a great neutral that goes with almost anything.

Comfy

While I love grey scale outfits, it’s also great to include a pop of color every now and then. Mauve has made another appearance in this post and I’m sure this outfit will be a popular option for me.

Casual

I couldn’t resist including a chambray shirt option in homage to my love for Johanna Gaines! The blue stands out against the heather grey and black pants. It’s the perfect casual option for cute cardigan outfits.

Classy

A black top with olive pants is a great classic look. Adding this heather grey cardigan for warmth is the perfect finishing touch to this cute cardigan outfit.

What to Wear with a Cardigan?

These are definitely my top five favorite cardigans that I wear all the time. I love having staple pieces that transition from comfy to casual to classy, for whatever my day looks like.
