Sometimes a design isn’t about how many elements you’re working with, but how bold the few you choose are. For this interior design board, I went really minimal but made a couple bold choices to stand out and make a statement!

The Colors

When you’re going with a design where you want specific elements to really stand out or be visible, one of the best ways to accomplish that is with a neutral background. So for this interior design board I chose one paint color, white.

The Textiles

Next up is textiles, and this is where we start adding character! I started with a really interesting black and white patterned textile. Its full of character and interest and really tells the story of the space. Next, I also included an off white heavy weave textile, a black suede, and a light brown faux leather.

The Details

As I mentioned, this interior design board is pretty minimal. Which means the only extra features I added were a wood flooring sample in a very light natural shade, a black door knob, and a palm branch!

Possible Designs

Alright, so I said you could make a bold design with minimal elements, but how? Well, here are some of the ideas I had based off of this minimal interior design board.

Interior Design Board: Living Room

For some reason, this interior design board says cozy and relaxed to me. So I couldn’t resist a living room design for it.

Since we only have one flooring option from this board, let’s go with our natural wood floor in this space. And since we only have one paint sample as well, let’s go ahead and use that on the walls.

Alright, now let’s create some layers! To read more about how important layers are, check out my other post Interior Design Basics Part Two: Layers

Start with our really cool patterned textile as an area rug. The black and white contrast will draw your eye to the space, and add interest with it’s unique pattern. Next add on a couch in a black textile.

Okay, now that we have our foundation, let’s add some color and texture. Use the black knob for inspiration on some curtain rods and furniture options. There are some AMAZING black metal end/coffee table options out there. Floor or table lamps will add to the space as well.

Add in some softer touches like curtains, floor poofs, and a whole mess of pillows in a combination of our textiles. Finding a pair of leather chairs in a minimal modern design would look great too!

I usually throw in some greenery stems because I’m such a fan of what they add to a space. In this space specifically, they are ESSENTIAL! So go grab a bunch of house plants in several varieties (real or artificial, whichever you prefer).

Interior Design Board: Bedroom

Bedrooms are a great space to get creative and make some fun design choices. For this space, let’s go with our wood floors and white walls again.

Next, I would include a black metal bed frame with a leather headboard option. Also include some patterned curtains similar to our black and white patterned textile from the interior design board. And to keep it light and bright, I would probably go with white or off white bedding.

Again, place a few plants around the room. And voila!!

Interior Design Board: Kitchen

Sometimes it can be tempting to think that kitchen designs can’t be minimal. But you’d have a hard time convincing me of that!

A kitchen created off of this interior design board could look something like this…

Since wood floors are usually a no go in a space with high water potential, let’s go with something else in this design. For flooring, see if you can find a tile option inspired from our black and white textile. There are MANY black and white patterned tile options out there, so pick one that speaks to you.

Next let’s talk about the walls and cabinets. For the walls, you guessed it, WHITE! Which will make a perfect backdrop for some beautiful natural wood cabinets. Keep the cabinets really minimal and modern with straight edges and clean lines. Then add some black door pulls.

To finish the space, include some leather island chairs, green plants (of course), and black curtains to add depth and interest.

There you have it! If it’s a little too minimal for you, I would suggest adding simple elements like white subway tile backsplash or a black vent hood to add more interest and character to the space while also still having a minimal feel to it.
